The Wine Advocate
(From Robert M. Parker, Jr.’s The Wine Advocate, Issue 149, October 31, 2003)
Two impressive efforts from a newcomer to these pages, Charter Oak’s 2001 Zinfandel Premium (which includes a small amount of Syrah) exhibits abundant wood notes, but that component is well-balanced by fleshy, concentrated black cherry and currant flavors. Notions of earth and tar also make an appearance in this full-bodied, ripe Zinfandel. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2001 Zinfandel Monte Rosso (175 cases) initially reveals some spicy oak, but it is quickly integrated into the sweet strawberry and black cherry fruit, earth, tar and spice box characteristics. This deep, chewy, medium to full-bodied, dense, well-made wine is best consumed over the next 2-3 years.
